This is a movie that gets under your skin and soaks its way into your soul without resorting to maudlin or melodramatic moments; it leaves its mark in under 90 minutes. Go to Full Review

While the first half plays out as a conventional family drama, there’s an abrupt midfilm shift into metafiction that is like almost nothing else I’ve seen in a movie. Go to Full Review

How exhilarating it is to come across a filmmaker whose eye is fresh, who views the familiar things of the world with a clarity and from angles that make them feel seen as if for the first time. Go to Full Review

Most dramas look for a tidy resolution. Blue Heron understands that goal is impossible, and has the hard-earned wisdom to show the pursuit is its own limited reward. Go to Full Review

ROBERT L 4d Very realistic portrayal of mental illness in a young person and how it affects an entire family. Brilliant directing, cinematography, acting, See more John D 5d I haven’t cried like I did at this movie in decades. See more Remy Apr 24 Overrated critics movie but not the worst. See more Kevin L @Lakeman 15h Writer & director Sophy Romvari shows remarkable skill in her debut full-length outing. This is highly mature, perceptive film making that works with some very difficult, delicate issues that's part psychiatry, part trauma effects, and also family dynamics between parents & their eldest son, Jeremy, who has never quite resolved issues he never seems to communicate aside from acting out. The performances are fantastic. Réti & Tompa as the parents come across as an authentic, empathetic couple who are at a loss as to how to deal w/ Jeremy's behavior. Beddoes as Jeremy & Guven as 8-yr. Sasha are special. One seems a truly troubled YA/teen, & the other, a sister who clearly cares for her brother but has no idea why he is troubled or what to do to help him. Amy Zimmer is equally impressive as a child services worker who still feels great love for the problems her own sibling had. This is revealed in the latter part of the film/ which is like a bit of metafiction. 4.2 stars See more Zachary 1d Blue Heron reexamines painful childhood memories through the lens of an adult filmmaker seeking closure.
