Nancy E @nee1949 Apr 24 I loved this version of JANE EYRE. Having never read the book, I didn't have a preconceived notion as to how it would go. I judged it strictly on how the characters interacted with each other and if the plot made any sense. If anyone knows anything about Victorian England, they could see that George and Susannah played their parts just right. Jane was not as young as the book depicted and certainly not ugly, but I didn't mind. It was a class thing. Rochester was older, from an upper class, and had lots of money, whereas Jane was an orphan with no money except wages. It's no wonder that Rochester was initially gruff and demanding to her. She was to know her place. However, Jane shows some spunk by her honesty and integrity, causing Rochester to respect her more than he did at first, which led to loving her. We are to believe that Rochester has enough money to support Jane and any children they would have, despite his blindness. They accept each other's limitations and marry. Scott played the tortured soul of Mr Rochester very well, his character is fascinating and we can see why Jane becomes fascinated by him. His chemistry with Susannah York is fantastic! The movie has, gorgeous scenery of the English countryside and the brooding moors, and fantastic background music. If you like the story and have the opportunity...by all means watch this great version of a classic novel.
