P F 4d The Box of Delights is a miniseries that lives up to its name. It’s never boring and often is spectacular, even if not completely faithful to its novel. For a serial about nostalgia, the BBC’s 1984 adaptation has itself become that to older generations who remember those days of watching Ghostbusters (1984) at the cinema while playing on their ZX Spectrum. It’s also quintessentially British, and that’s not such a bad thing. While the lack of an established back-story can throw the viewer off who hasn’t read John Masefield’s novels before watching the series, and the ending compared to the source material still might be met as a weak compromise, the positives generally outweigh the negatives. An exciting mix of warlocks who engage in criminal activity, vicars who turn into wolves, flying cars, oversized rats, 2D cel animation, time travel and exciting special effects wrapped up in a Christmas-themed package that never fails to impress. It dances through the Christmas landscape without fear of affecting its target audience. At times it can genuinely frighten younger viewers, but then again, without that, it would certainly lose its appeal to others. This maybe why it wasn’t repeated as often as its theatrical merit deserves. For those unafraid of exposing their younger viewers to such fair, I can only recommend it as a journey into wonderland, both fearful and magical in equal measure.
