Bill Dubuque deserves a great deal of credit for writing Christian Wolff, a character who could have easily become a gimmick in the hands of a lesser screenwriter. Instead, Wolff feels unique, intelligent, and consistently interesting. Ben Affleck is perfectly cast in the role. His restrained performance allows the character's intelligence and social awkwardness to come through naturally without becoming exaggerated. Director Gavin O'Connor does a good job balancing the film's mystery, action, and character-driven moments. The story occasionally becomes more complicated than necessary, but it remains engaging throughout and rewards viewers who pay attention. Most importantly, The Accountant works because it offers more than action. Beneath the gunfights and conspiracies is a surprisingly compelling character study, and that gives the film a staying power many similar thrillers lack. Ben Affleck is pretty as this fastidious autistic accountant and lethal killer Christian Wolff. He gives off very little emotional range, so the role is perfect for a very stoic actor like Affleck. Anna Kendrick is super cute and charming as Dana Cummings, who foolishly looks through her company’s books and sees money missing. The fact that she’s surprised they want to kill her means her character has never seen Weekend at Bernie’s. She’s very sensitive to the possible romance subplot, but obviously she’s way too young for Ben Affleck. J. K. Simmons is excellent as the curious Director of the Treasury Department’s financial crime investigators Raymond King. He’s quite interesting and basically Jim Gordon already here. Cynthia Addai-Robinson is wonderful as the young Treasury agent Marybeth. Jon Bernthal is fantastic as the brutal security boss Braxton, who is Affleck’s considerate brother. It’s only "messy" if you think a Jackson Pollock painting is "messy"—likely because you haven’t looked beyond the surface to appreciate it. The acting is amazing, I loved the plot, the action was brilliant. As a person with autism I can say that Affleck portrayed autism perfectly, I don't understand why this film gets so much controversy. Every person with autism is different and acts different to one another. I never liked action films before this but this film is just so amazing and original that I came to like action films. I have watched this so many times and never get bored of it. I hope the sequel is as good as this, love to see more films like this.
