Critics Consensus

A quiet, dialogue-driven thriller that delivers with scene after scene of gut-wrenching anxiety. David Fincher also spends more time illustrating nuances of his characters and recreating the mood of the '70s than he does on gory details of murder.

More than any American movie of the past decade, Zodiac accepts and embraces irresolvability, which may be why it's so hypnotically rewatchable. Go to Full Review

Downey Jr is perfect as the alcoholic wastrel of a crime reporter Paul Averi, as is Mark Raffalo as the dependable cop David. Go to Full Review

[W]here Se7en, with its stygian gloom and theatrical executions, inflated the serial killer genre to gothic proportions, Zodiac lets the air back out. It is methodical rather than macabre, clinical rather than cruel. Go to Full Review

Zodiac is a heavily dialogue-driven affair with endless scenes of powerful men arguing in offices. Fincher brings it all to the screen with his trademark attention to detail and tireless quest for truth and verisimilitude. Go to Full Review

Moira I 09/18/2022 Good thriller, fine cast See more Raul R @RT79051021 4d A long film with no thrills. It just painstakingly retells the the story of the reporters and police, with no hint of a climax. The shots are good, the actors are good, but you just sit there watching nothing happen. See more Logan D @Greynomad38 4d During the 70s, police and journalists are confounded by a man who claims to be Zodiac and responsible for the murders of several persons. This film is more of a time capsule than a mystery. It follows a straightforward narrative, attempting to portray the investigations accurately. Fincher does a great job immersing us into the time with smoke filled rooms, frantic news rooms, and the tactile presence of documents one must sift thru to find nuggets of information. about the physics of the search and the material cost of seeking a truth that remains out of reach. Oddly, however, the realism of the film also makes it emotionally distant and the audience is captured more by the fact these are true events being portrayed. John Carroll Lynch (Fargo) excels in portraying one of the major suspects. See more Jovana M. @J_loves_movies Apr 12 Probably one of the best thrillers! Keeps you on edge the entire time, great cast and story-telling! A must watch See more Melissa W @adenium Feb 24 The Zodiac's plot, cinematography, and acting are very well crafted and executed. It successfully captured the emotions of frustration, anxiousness, and curiosity that the characters had with every lead and interaction with the Zodiac. Although the ending is not the ideal ending that viewers want, it conveys and questions the reality, tragedy, and consequences that come with murder, obsession with curiosity, and the media. Overall, I found it an interesting film with a good plot and complex characters. It was a bit long to sit through, though, but if you want a film that makes you feel a range of emotions/tension and an interesting psychological thriller built through slow-burning suspense with not really any jump scares, I would recommend The Zodiac. See more Thyaagu C @Thyaagu Feb 19 Raging at Zodiac's dead end, Fincher channeled all that pissed-off fury from the case straight into our veins as a movie. I just can't prove this was his main motive. See more Read all reviews
