Rebecca S @RT56218508 May 1 We really enjoyed The Outsider 2018 so much so we hoped for a sequel. Tip, be prepared for a large amount of subtitle. I was surprised that 'Critics' rated it low but then not because they usually are critical no pun intended. I do think the critics were a bit harsh, especially after viewing this film a few times and truly enjoying it. Actually enjoying some aspects critics panned. One being the "lack of emotional content/robotic" performance Leto’s put in as lead character. I think this was effectively depicting a "shell of a man" who’s soul was lost to a war he never agreed with and was apparently a deserter mid rank soldier that was later imprisoned by the Japanese. This just works. I do agree with some negatives regarding sidestepping interesting Japanese characters, I wish they spent more time focusing on the supporting characters, as there were some really fascinating dynamics there. Overall, this is a slow burn, and compelling in an unusual way. It’s beautifully produced and filmed. If not for everyone, for those that appreciate this approach. I'd kept this film on my list of movies to watch on Netflix for a while now, as the description piqued my interest. I'd been shallow enough to not actually watch it for all this time because of the low rating from critics on here. After watching it tonight, I'm going to stop checking a movies critic rating, or at least not let that influence my watching a film or not. The tone, pace, acting, visuals, dialogue, and story were all very cohesive and made up a great film. There were multiple moments that I could really feel the emotions being presented, especially in the silence in these moments. 5 stars recommend this film, it was a refreshing take on the overly saturated "gangster" genre, props to the team involved in its making.
