The Electric State is a spectacular adventure from the directors of Avengers: Endgame set in an alternate, retro-futuristic version of the 1990s. Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Enola Holmes, Damsel) stars as Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating life in a society where sentient robots resembling cartoons and mascots, who once served peacefully among humans, now live in exile following a failed uprising. Everything Michelle thinks she knows about the world is upended one night when she's visited by Cosmo, a sweet, mysterious robot who appears to be controlled by Christopher -- Michelle's genius younger brother whom she thought was dead. Determined to find the beloved sibling she thought she had lost, Michelle sets out across the American southwest with Cosmo, and soon finds herself reluctantly joining forces with Keats (Chris Pratt, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World), a low-rent smuggler, and his wisecracking robot sidekick, Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie). As they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a walled-off corner in the desert where robots now exist on their own, Keats and Michelle find a strange, colorful group of new animatronic allies -- and begin to learn that the forces behind Christopher's disappearance are more sinister than they ever expected.

Critics Consensus

Lumbering along like a giant automaton, The Electric State has plenty of hardware to back it up but none of the spark that'd make it come to life.

Audience Says

The Electric State may stray from its source material and occasionally feel commercially driven, but Chris Pratt’s comedic chops are delightfully sparky.

There is a very Marvel-ish aspect to this film, but in a recycled and dull way. Go to Full Review

The Electric State is so transparently eager to satisfy as many demographics of viewers as possible that it proves its own message: that a world dependent on business interests and technological optimization dulls artistic potential and human ingenuity. Go to Full Review

The beats of a Russo brothers movie are so predetermined they don’t bear lingering on, but The Electric State might be the first time they’ve opted to just skip over them altogether. Go to Full Review

A lifeless and empty husk of "content" in the worst sense of the word, it’s as if the Russos took Stålenhag’s striking illustrations, put them into a shredder and half-heartedly assembled what it spat out. Go to Full Review

Sometimes an idea seems like such a sure thing no one in charge pays attention to the details that ensure quality. I think that’s the principle that led to “The Electric State” being less than the sum of its parts. Go to Full Review

Noah H @Noah85 1h REALLY GOOD. Concept of the robot war was pretty cool and I thought Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown were great in their roles. Felt like their characters could have been fleshed out a little better but I'm sure they did the best they could with what they had. Buddy is a cool robot and Mr. Peanut was fun. Woody Harrelson did a great job, in my opinion. Herman was HILARIOUS! ANTHONY MACKIE KILLED IT!!!! Also, I thought the CGI was solid too and so was the musical score. Alan Silvestri is ALWAYS SUPREMELY TALENTED. My only other problem with this movie was that Key Huy Quan's character was wasted. He didn't really add anything to the movie. Overall, though, If you love apocalyptic movies with robots then this is definitely for you. Again, the world and characters could have been developed a little better and Key Huy Quan's character was wasted but there's still a lot to enjoy. See more Laurie S @Karlwinters 2d Even teenagers thought it as crap. The high scoring reviewers here must have been very young. See more B H @PurpSerp 4d A great performance from Millie and Chris Pratt. I loved the premise and the story flowed well. Sometimes some things felt obvious, but it was still a very engaging movie. Millie's role after ST shows her in a completely different light. Her acting skills, coupled with Pratt's, created a humoures atmosphere. Watch if you enjoy post-apocalyse, robots, or just enjoy sci-fi. Its a fun, heartfelt movie. I really enjoyed it. The "critics" here, I feel are chronically online and missed the essence of the actual story, even if it did stray from the book. If you want to read a book, read a book. If you want an easy movie to watch and enjoy, id highly suggest this one to everyone I know. See more Justin S @TheMoviesMan Jan 31 A compelling, emotionally grounded sci-fi film that blends suspense, humor, and heartfelt sacrifice with disciplined storytelling. Strong performances, clear world building, and well earned twists make this one of Netflix’s standout releases in recent years and a universe that feels ready for expansion. This is as big as Stranger Things now I know that’s a series but I can also see this turning into a series or a movie with chapter’s. I would give this 10 stars if I could. See more Kristine T @KTags Jan 25 If you're a Guardians of the Galaxy fan or Marvel fan in general, you'll enjoy this movie. The cast was very good and writing was very funny. Chris Pratt and his one line zingers are delivered so effortlessly. Millie Bobbie Brown was well cast and the chemistry and her and Pratt was excellent. I was pleased with this original movie idea. See more Noah W @StrangerThingsFan Jan 22 Can you get any better than this movie?! IT IS THE BEST, the script is hilarious and great, the story is SO good and the acting can't get any better. 100% reccomend See more Read all reviews
