[A] deeply affecting adaptation of the acclaimed Terence Rattigan play... Go to Full Review
Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic 06/18/2013
Now a new film of the play appears, adapted and directed by Terence Davies with Rachel Weisz in that stellar [Hester Collyer] role and with Rattigan's work in a freshening treatment. Go to Full Review
David Thomson The New Republic 06/17/2013
The movie is an exquisite period piece, slow and dank, and unduly persuaded that it's rendering a classic. Go to Full Review
Alistair Lawrence Common Sense Media 03/11/2025

pawpaw C @RT67633552 2h Dreary . . . I got only half way and had to hit the Gong! See more Rose H @RT88694134 03/17/2025 A slow moving, grim and painful movie experience. The soundtrack was a hokey 1950s dramatic violin concerto. I love Rachel Weiss and Tim Huddleston, but this was a hard watch. See more Alain E @AlainE 12/26/2024 It is interesting to see that this, rather limited in terms of story movie, enjoys almost universal approval by the professionals, while the similarly themed and much stronger The heart of Me has a green splash with 50%. Both are free on Tubi. The acting is good here and the cinematography pleasant. What happens could be narrated in half the time. See more Jennifer M @Jennym1982 08/14/2023 Very great acting, in this movie. I am happy I found it on Amazon. Great Chemistry to. See more Gareth v @geewah 06/19/2023 This stage play adaption starring the underrated Weisz, is a bit of a drag at times but okay. The tale of being attracted to the shiny new toy. See more 08/18/2021 Felt like it was written for the stage and not for film. Poorly adapted for film, which is a pity as the acting is first rate. See more Read all reviews
