While out hunting, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the grisly aftermath of a drug deal. Though he knows better, he cannot resist the cash left behind and takes it with him. The hunter becomes the hunted when a merciless killer named Chigurh (Javier Bardem) picks up his trail. Also looking for Moss is Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), an aging lawman who reflects on a changing world and a dark secret of his own, as he tries to find and protect Moss.

The lack of respect for the body, the sheer bloody aftermath depresses me. Yes, they may handle the killing with verve and ironic tension, but this is a Coen brothers film too far.

The folksy characters typical of the Coens’ work are perfectly juxtaposed against the ruthlessness of Bardem’s incomparable performance. Both the landscape and soundscape are simultaneously barren and rich, mirroring the understated yet powerful dialogue.

Whether the Coens have made better movies is subject to opinion but there is something incontrovertible about No Country’s status as god-tier filmmaking. Repeat viewings do nothing to lessen its staggering power.

Easily the best movie from the Coen brothers since Fargo, also centering around a bag of stolen money. Performances are roundly superb with Javier Bardem portraying with absolute menace one of the best villain performances of all time. Similar in pessimistic tone to a lot of the late work of other artists, for example novelist Graham Greene and filmmaker Woody Allen. No Country For Old Men is, like Fargo before it, truly outstanding filmmaking.

I had to rewatch this film a second time to get the things I missed , but it wasn’t hard to do so. Bardem played insanely well and even though the end feels less rewarding to some folks the way it was written was awesome. “It’s not about age—it’s about losing your framework for understanding reality.”
