The producers must have absolutely loved this picture—it's the safest, most by-the-numbers version imaginable: a "badass" villain, attractive women, an all-white cast, a paint-by-numbers script, and near-nudity that carefully avoids showing anything. The original films weren’t masterpieces, so we can’t expect much—but at least they had some personality. This one mostly coasts on nostalgia, and even that wears thin halfway through. Taken as a standalone horror movie, it works reasonably well: it has a darker modern look, a few decent scares, and maintains a steady pace that makes it watchable from start to finish. That said, as a remake of Wes Craven's 1984 masterpiece, it falls far short. Freddy lacks the sinister charisma that made him iconic, the dream sequences feel generic, and the film struggles to recreate the surreal terror of the original. Instead, it ends up as another conventional slasher with a familiar name attached. It's not terrible as a basic horror film, but a weak and disappointing remake when compared to the original classic. It improves slightly by exploring themes of childhood trauma and sleep disorders, with a clear structure and a mystery that leads to a somewhat predictable twist. However, contrivances and unrealistic character behavior make parts of the story hard to accept. Combined with one-dimensional characters and some flat performances, the film can feel more amateurish than it is. On the positive side, the camerawork is solid and the special effects mostly work, despite some noticeable CGI. The new Freddy Krueger is a different take that, while not perfect, I appreciated. It’s not particularly scary beyond a few jump scares, and while it delivers on a basic level, it lacks ambition.
