Recently released from prison, Malik (Omar Epps), a feared gang leader from Chicago's West Side, returns home determined to avenge the murder of his closest friend, Sayeed. His loyal right-hand, Mike (Corey Hendrix), tries to hold their crew together as hotheaded members like 2wo 3ree (Wiz Khalifa) and Meechie (Skilla Baby) push for retaliation. His grandmother, a god-fearing woman who raised him, leaves Malik a small icon of St. Moses the Black -- whose story begins to shadow him with visions he can't ignore. As rival gangs -- led by a ruthless leader (Quavo) -- and a corrupt cop (Cliff Chamberlain) close in, and with the streets edging toward all-out war, Malik must confront a past that refuses to let go -- and the most dangerous threat of all: the enemy within.

This gives Moses the Black a level of spirituality, this one rooted in biblical history, that's often missing in gangster sagas. It elevates the crime drama without blunting the inherent violence of Malik and his world. Go to Full Review

Moses the Black is a clumsy mix of a gang member's redemption story and religious preaching about St. Moses. The two aspects of this rambling drama are disjointed throughout this very boring movie with a weak ending. Go to Full Review

Moses the Black's themes of retribution versus compassion and penance are clumsily handled in a poorly edited film with one-note performances, scant surprises, and a bizarre flashback structure. Go to Full Review
