Critics Consensus

Live Free or Die Hard may be preposterous, but it's an efficient, action-packed summer popcorn flick with thrilling stunts and a commanding performance by Bruce Willis. Fans of the previous Die Hard films will not be disappointed.

But ultimately it's [Bruce] Willis who makes this loopy action movie so endearing...Nobody dies it better. Go to Full Review

Though it's mostly entertaining (if overlong), there is a sense that the whole thing has become somewhat rote. Go to Full Review

Even though NYPD Det. John McClane doesn’t always feel like the McClane we know and love, director Len Wiseman does such a wonderful job orchestrating bravado shootouts, fights, and chases that our most basic entertainment needs are met. Go to Full Review

This worthy addition to the Die Hard franchise sticks to a refreshingly old-fashioned (but no less effective) action formula throughout. Go to Full Review

Brian C @RT30987596 3d The Die Hard Franchise lives up to it's name, but this movie is where it became terminal. The plot feels like a carbon copy of every movie in the early 2000's that combined hackers and terrorism. From the peak of fitness in the first movie through the declining health, by the fourth installment, Die Hard descended from having villains portrayed by Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons to a mild-mannered and charming Timothy Olyphant while sidekicks went from Samuel L. Jackson to Justin Long. Bruce Willis and some fun action scenes carried this movie (to the hospital). Refusing to Die, Hard to watch. See more Nathan J @NathanDirector Jul 6 Rating: 7.6/10 ⭐️ Threw this on for 4th of July because a patriotic McClane flick felt perfect. Absolutely love how this upgrades his old-school grit into the digital age with insane action. What Worked: • Practical stunts honestly look incredible with a brutal weight that completely pops. • Olyphant makes a great, calculating villain with a lot of sharp menace. • Justin Long’s chemistry with Willis is super fun, balancing tough guy and tech nerd. The Friction: • The F-35 jet chasing the semi truck part near the end really dragged for me. • The PG-13 rating honestly toned down some of McClane’s classic, raw edge. Verdict: Watch for a high-octane blockbuster. Skip if logic-defying stunts annoy you. See more Oscar T @ScarfaceRampage Jun 27 Just as awesome as the original films and the coolest movie title ever. See more Petros T @PetrosTserpelis Jun 8 It takes the risk of being deemed cringe with its hi-tech '00s plot about hackers and the generational gap themes yet for the most part emerges unscathed largely thanks to the amusing pairing of Willis with Justin Long, the big-scale action and the occasional jolts of humour toning down the self-seriousness. It won't go down in history as a great action movie, but it should be applauded for trying something different compared to the original and for giving us a mighty good, preposterous time. See more Kau M @KauaMiguel Jun 3 The drop in quality this film has compared to the previous ones is absurd. Here, the concept of "more and bigger" was taken and resulted in the worst die-hard experience I've ever had. I've never heard such poorly written and idiotic dialogue; nothing makes sense, the action is excessively bad and unbelievable. But thankfully, the two protagonists are great, and the characters are very captivating. See more Frans B @FransB May 29 Brilliant! If you are a Die Hard fan, this will not disappoint. Well written and directed. Great cinematography and visually stunning with some new tricks up the effects sleeve. Lots of typical frantic Die Hard action, explosions, chases, drama, suspense, twists, bad guys, good guys, clever guys, sharp witted remarks and all things Bruce Willis, as well. Entertaining and gripping See more Read all reviews
