It's the height of the Cold War, and famous archaeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), returning from his latest adventure, finds out his job at Marshall College is in jeopardy. He meets Mutt (Shia La Beouf), a young man who wants Indy to help him find the legendary Crystal Skull of Akator, and the pair set out for Peru. However, deadly agent Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) is searching for the powerful artifact, too, because the Soviets believe it can help them conquer the world.

Critics Consensus

Though the plot elements are certainly familiar, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull still delivers the thrills and Harrison Ford's return in the title role is more than welcome.

There are so many levels of nostalgia piled onto Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that it’s hard to unearth a nugget of new inspiration; but the golden oldies that are doled out should dazzle those who cheer for the familiar.

It is like seeing a dear old friend. Indiana once made us all feel we could be stronger and braver, if we tried. And he wasn't a silly modern superhero, just a guy who combined a thirst for knowledge with great courage and ingenuity.

Despite the film’s many poor choices that range from mildly distracting to hugely damaging, I found plenty to like in Crystal Skull, and I don’t think it completely goes against the spirit of the Indiana Jones movies

Though exhausting and relentless, it's hard to dislike, thanks to Ford's weary charm, his leather-jacketed new wingman Shia LaBeouf, and an emphasis on pleasingly "old school" stuntwork.

I will never understand the hatred for the refrigerator scene — it’s a marvelous set-piece and very much in the spirit of the whole franchise. You want a low point? How about Shia LaBeouf’s Mutt swinging through the trees alongside a bunch of CGI monkeys?

A terrible continuation of a beloved franchise from my childhood. The story was predictable, trite, and overall a tremendous letdown. I do not understand how so many critics gave it a favorable review.

It still feels disjointed to see the shift from watching Indy chase after Earth-based religious artifacts inspired by supernatural beings to a different one inspired by space aliens. There was the Ark of the Covenant, then a mystical gem used for black magic, a cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper, and a crystallized carving shaped like an alien skull. It just seems so out of place and unusual.

I blame David Koepp, who wrote one huge blockbuster and a dozen or more utterly junk films. The other issue at hand is the film replaces the imitation "classic Hollywood" style of the first film with cartoonish, oddly timed computer animation effects. Many liked the third film, apparently the highest grossing film of it's year? I couldn't remember it. Maybe I should go back? Seems like Indiana Jones films are essentially set piece films with basic characters and a traditional sense of fun and adventure, but this movie really doesn't make much sense. Aliens and stuff? "Harmless" atomic bomb testing?? This isn't a love letter to old adventure tales, it's comic book material, and not a particularly good iteration.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, pretty bad. This is directed by Steven Spielberg. And, the cinematography is pretty good. But the story kind of reminds me of National Treasure 2. The action sequences are good. But, overall, I give this film a 6.5/10 or 3/5 stars.

Synopsis
