Critics Consensus

With Adam Sandler and company clearly having a good time, Happy Gilmore 2 thwacks hard with nostalgia when it should've putted but will still put fans of the original back in their happy place.

The sense of if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it suits a movie with no great aim but to call back to the original. A modern critic might point out the irony of yesterday’s outsider becoming today’s guardian of old-school wisdom. Go to Full Review
Maxwell Rabb Chicago Reader Aug 1
We get some light chuckles and one-off jokes, but the story, with bones to be genuinely gripping, flatlines thanks to an onslaught of half-assed gags and cameos. Go to Full Review

There are laughs to be had, here and there; the good news is, the sequel isn’t terrible. It’s just not anything special, nothing with the spark of the original. Go to Full Review
Luke Goodsell ABC News (Australia) 6d
A breezy and intermittently funny comedy that sticks to the playbook of every decades-later sequel, sending its hero back to zero to lazily rehash the beats of its predecessor. Go to Full Review

It is still, ultimately, a very silly exercise in nostalgia. Go to Full Review

Sandler’s bar-mitzvah-banquet genre is the closest American movies get to the emotional amplitude of France’s Jean Renoir. Go to Full Review

Kim P @RT98672688 May 6 Certainly doesn't deserve all the negativity the critics have given it, but it IS a Sandler comedy, so it's mandatory, i suppose. A few laugh-out-loud moments (Jon Lovitz is in my favorite), but it's generally just a sweet, mildly amusing movie with some mooning and peeing to make sure the critics hate it. I think the most impressive thing about the movie is the fact that there's easily over 50 cameo appearances from golfers, broadcasters, family members, and characters from the first Happy Gilmore and yet everyone has several lines or comedic bits to deliver. They're participating, not just making an extraneous appearance. A fun watch, not a side-splitting comedy. See more Emily B @RT37386638 Apr 29 Quite possibly the worst Adam Sandler production. If you like loud and flashy - this is for you. If you liked happy Gilmore productions original jokes - this isn’t for you. Felt rushed and forced, between the down your throat references to the 1st film make you realize how terrible this one is. Stinker. Also no one care About your kids in the movie make some other bs w them. See more Bret M. @BretM-3 Mar 20 Happy Gilmore 2 is a really good, underrated sequel! Adam Sandler is hilarious in this movie just like the first. Shooter is also a hilarious character and it was nice seeing him and Happy resolve their issues. I also thought his kids were good and added a great motive for Happy to do what he does in this movie. The main bad guy was a little annoying, but I otherwise really enjoyed the Maxi golf antagonists and thought that the new replacing the old was a very appropriate theme in 2025. It was an interesting choice to have Virginia die early in the movie, but I thought it also helped add fuel to Happy's fire. Overall, Happy Gilmore 2 is a hilarious legacy sequel that recaptures the humor and everything else I loved about the original, while also keeping it new and refreshing. Worth watching if you're a fan of the original. See more J D @JDub1 Feb 27 Just as good, if not better, than the first one! See more Read all reviews
