Watching the actual transformation of the actors overtime instead of different people playing them at different ages really makes a difference. Both parent roles shine and Mason's character is very grounded in the quintessential teen experience. I recommend this as a watch for anyone. very dynamic and original concept for a film. See more Barton M @RT84953713 Jun 24 It’s wild this movie sits at only 80% . The reviews miss point. Richard Linklater and crew did something remarkable over a 12 year period. Instead of a traditional story about growing up, he lets us experience it. We watch people age, change, make mistakes, and become who they are. Since then, I have gone back to it and I feel something different. Childhood isn’t a traditional story with neat resolutions and dramatic plot twists so neither is this movie. It’s scary, different, whiny, predictable, hypocritical at times, painful, and above all tough and that’s what Boyhood captures so well. There’s no movie hero, a kid trying figures things out and navigate his own course, like most of us were. Maybe it won’t connect with everyone, and that’s okay. But for me, Boyhood is one of those rare, magical films that feels less like a movie and more like a life itself. If you’re on the fence, give it a chance.
