Joel H @786Joel Feb 28 An American Tail: Fievel Goes West was released five years after the original film with a budget that was almost double the first, so you’d think that they had plenty of time to craft a well-written story with some polished animation. You’d be mistaken. This sequel is mostly rehashed plot points and random silliness. It’s still a likeable movie, though, and James Horner’s score is fantastic (even if it does rip off Aaron Copland). Plus, it always warms my heart to hear Jimmy Stewart’s voice. It may not be as iconic as An American Tail, but Fievel Goes West is a fun little journey to the animated West. See more Blu B @RT43513976 Jun 24 Gone is any of the commentary of immigrants/American Dream and replaced with comedic slapstick gags and a cartoon episode like feel for barely a 70 minute runtime excluding credits. Voice acting, animation, and music isn't bad but man it's all a huge step down from the first. The Western setting is ok but it's mainly used for again gags and subplots like Fievel's sister, Tiger's journey which could be it's own spinoff movie, his family, and the music numbers all don't feel as tight as the first did. The early CGI scenes are pretty cool and the best things visually. It still retains the detail of the first but is just used for comedically dumb childish scenes. Everything else is alright. This comes very close at times to just being a repeat of the first just in the West. Tiger's whole subplot feels like a seperate movie and half of it is just Tiger related gags. It's a shame because he was one of the ebst things in the first but here he's been reduced to just gags. Stewart's character isn't bad and probably the best thing acting wise here besides DeLouise who is decent too. It's just a shame they weren't given more depth. After stripping away gags and music numbers there is probably a 30 minute maybe 40 minute actuals story here. But the execution is still decent enough and it is harmless Saturday Morning cartoon stuff. So it does have a bit of a charm I guess but nowhere near the first. If your a huge fan of any actors in this, or a big fan of this franchise maybe give this a try but it's nowhere as good as the first but harmless enough. Most won't miss much though.
