It's not the funniest movie, but it is a comforting feel good, silly, light hearted movie that reminds us of a time before movies became a club of serious lecturing to beat us over the head with. It tries hard to be a comedy, but most of the jokes miss the mark, leaving long stretches that feel more awkward than entertaining. What should have been a fun adventure ends up feeling like a chore to sit through. The characters never become particularly interesting, and the pacing struggles to keep the film moving. Many scenes feel repetitive, while the humor often relies on gags that simply don't land. Instead of building momentum, the movie seems to lose energy as it goes along. If there is one thing Almost Heroes succeeds at, it's proving that not every comedy ages well. For me, it's a masterpiece that belongs in the fire—a film that left me frustrated rather than amused. Since this movie is directed by Christopher Guest and stars Chris Farley, Matthew Perry, and Eugene Levy, you would think it should be comedy gold. But it isn’t. And so I have to put the blame on the writing. The jokes are telegraphed far in advance and, in their exploration for humor, they always seem to take the low road. In addition, it feels like some of the story and dialogue were made up on the spot. There are moments when Almost Heroes is almost funny, but for the most part this comedy feels like a long journey filled with unfulfilled potential. See more Read all reviews
