With 2073 Kapadia tries something different. Scifiumentary? He sets us a bleak future where a survivor named Ghost navigates a ruined "New San Francisco." But the sci-fi framing is just a vehicle; Ghost’s nightmares provide a barrage of real-world documentary footage from today. This jarring structure results in reviews of 1 or 5. People either respect its sheer audacity or hate it, walking away feeling completely beaten down. And let’s be honest: 2073 is deeply disturbing. This isn't Minority Report or Bladerunner. This is real people dying, police brutalizing protesters, and actual human suffering. It makes the viewing dark and exhausting. What makes this so is its horrifying plausibility. It cuts far deeper because it isn't an imagined future; it’s a logical extension of our current path. The problem is that there are literally only about 20 minutes of scenes set in this dystopian future (which is intriguing), and then we're essentially watching an HBO, Discovery, or Netflix documentary. It's filled with interviews, statements, viral social media videos, and news footage from around the world. The message it wants to convey is easy to grasp, but the film loses much of its impact by repeating the same points three or four times in a runtime of 1 hour and 20 minutes. It’s definitely political, but it didn’t feel unnecessary—it felt like a wake-up call. The kind that makes you uncomfortable because it doesn’t feel too far from reality. There’s an underlying message about staying quiet, keeping your head down, and how that can become a form of compliance, which was pretty unsettling to sit with. it shows that if you do revolt push back there are consequences which adds another layer to the feeling off were all ready kinda in it.
