Of course this movie is style over substance, because in many ways this is exactly how Marie Antoinette and the French court of Versailles lived, all style and very little substance. In many ways the true star of the film is Versailles itself. And what a palatial supernova it is! So much wall to wall beauty and decadence is hard to imagine when reading the history books, but here Sophia Coppola has brought it vividly to the screen. The entire thing feels almost dreamlike, a strange gilded cage for its willing prisoners. Don't watch this film as a biopic of the famous French queen, enjoy it for what it is, a glimpse of Versailles; the most extreme expression of style over substance the world has ever seen. If you want to make a period piece, then make a period piece, but I am not sure that's what she wanted and it just created this odd aesthetic and feel. It's not bad, it's just weird.
