Griffith J @griffithxjohnson May 6 Definitely slow paced & slightly boring but the deep dive into the complex & layered mind of Truman Capote is very interesting with Hoffman bringing a truly unique & convincing performance. The look at American writing as it undergoes a massive change due to his work is an impactful piece of literary history. It’s bleak & sad as it faces tough questions about the death penalty & morality of true crime authors. Strange to say that the first half of this film has a really cosy tone as the time period is well presented. Capote’s troubled motivations & self centered ways show all his strangeness & historical points in very real ways. Capote’s relationship with the murderers of the Clutter family in 1959, is intriguing to watch. Overall, Very dramatic and well acted movie. Drawn to Kansas by a brutal murder, Capote begins researching what becomes In Cold Blood, aided by lifelong confidante Nelle Harper Lee (Catherine Keener). What starts as reportage deepens into a fraught duet with condemned killer Perry Smith (Clifton Collins Jr.), their exchanges echoing with unresolved chords of empathy, manipulation, and need. Miller keeps the tempo measured, each scene a carefully placed note, refusing flourish in favor of lingering resonance. The film charts not only the birth of a landmark book but the unraveling of its author, who sacrifices innocence for art.
