What to Know

Critics Consensus

Vivarium may confound almost as often as it intrigues, but this well-acted sci-fi/horror hybrid has interesting ideas -- and explores them with style.

Vivarium's purgatory is more clear-cut, though that somehow doesn't make it any less mysterious... Go to Full Review

The story comes to a flawless punchline at almost exactly 27 minutes. The snag is that Vivarium has more than an hour still to run... Go to Full Review

Domesticity sucks the life out of everyone. But it's thin thematic reward for seeing the wheels behind this performer's eyes grind to a halt. Go to Full Review

Starting with its pivotal opening sequence of a cuckoo pushing out hatchlings from their nest to claim it as its own, Lorcan Finnegan’s feature knows exactly what it’s doing and it uses every tool at its disposal to deliver us to a devastating conclusion. Go to Full Review

Even though the two tried, they couldn't overcome a script that feels both apparent and undercooked. A good idea or two can only get you so far it seems. Go to Full Review

Vivarium is an interesting one. It might frustrate a lot of viewers with its surreal aspects, but it's still a compelling film. Go to Full Review

Dakota P @DaCinephile 10h Is the feeling of being trapped while watching Vivarium an incredible artistic decision or a lack of development? The cinematography is excellent. The performances, especially by Poots, are on point.  I just can’t help but feeling that the movie could have been a 30-minute YouTube short.  Maybe that was intentional, to have a similar anxiousness creep up while watching that mirrored the main characters living in monotony, but regardless it left me wanting something more fulfilling.  I don’t need plot hand-holding or a spelled out resolution but I do hope for progression, but if there was an artistic choice to push the viewer into the cold and endless suburban invariance, it could have been done more successfully. First time we've sat down for an entire movie in one sitting in years. Definitely a predecessor to all the Backrooms nonsense. Distractions: Eisenberg sucks as always, ambient score overpowers the scenery too often, no blood at all. See more Blade R @BladeRene 4d Vivarium is a visually striking and unsettling film that creates a strong sense of isolation and existential dread. Its central concept is compelling, and the artificial suburban setting remains disturbing throughout. While I appreciated its atmosphere and execution, the story becomes fairly predictable once its premise is established. It succeeds in maintaining its oppressive mood, but it doesn't evolve enough to leave a deeper emotional impact, making it a good film rather than a great one. See more Jennifer H @purplepeople19 Jul 23 The acting was superb, especially by Winslet. I found the plot fascinating but troublesome, especially the part about the child. Overall, I loved it and have watched it a few times. See more J H @UpstateNYThriller Jul 22 7/10 Supernatural, Suspense Strange suspense movie. Cant escape simulation Jesse Eisenberg lead actor 7/10 See more Erik L @RT21355119 Jul 18 A movie about two mid waspy cuckolds who find themselves trapped in a liminal suburban hellscape and proceed to not do the one thing that could possibly save them from psychosis and instead literally work themselves to death doing nothing. If I could unwatch this movie, even if it was an extremely painful process, I would rather endure 97 minutes of physical pain than retain my memory of this film. See more Read all reviews
