The movie is realistic, and you will want to pause every few seconds to appreciate the beautiful scenery. Wind Rises is based on the true story of a man who designed and built an extraordinary aircraft. It also has emotional moments, and the music hits right at your soul. Watch with your family and enjoy. The ending could have been clearer, but apart from that, everything is great. See more Kevin P @RT55971421 Jan 12 A wonderfully directed swan song for Miyazaki's admiration for aviation, with beautiful animation. The film has an impressive all-star voice cast. The film has some controversy over sugarcoating Imperial Japan's war crimes with this colorful romanticized version. But one could argue this is more of a character study, where passion for creation is exploited by the government for war and destruction. Jiro's dream sequences with his Italian aviation designer hero Giovanni Caproni are very colorful and insightful of Jiro's imagination. Jiro's short angry boss is hilarious. I'm glad they still condemn the Axis powers in the cafe scene. Naoko's brief marriage with Jiro is really sweet, and her inevitable fate is tragic. I just wish that the movie focused more on Jiro's grief and his guilt over building warplanes. Jiro feels emotionally distant and stoic. The final post-war dream is fittingly bittersweet. The movie is very charming, but could've used more meat to the character inner turmoil. M @Johann33 Sep 5 🇯🇵 This animated historical drama film was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, based on his 2009 manga of the same name. It tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi as he studies assiduously to fulfill his aim of becoming an aeronautical engineer. As WWII begins, fighter aircraft designed by him end up getting used by the Japanese Empire against its foes. This great achievement in animation shows Miyazaki deeply immersed in his element: his passion for aircraft. His expertise is vividly captured in the details and the story of a man whose remarkable talent was tragically harnessed for war. The historical backdrop feels accurate and raw, and despite being one of Miyazaki’s most different works—leaving fantasy behind to embrace history—it remains an engaging and extraordinarily moving adult story, full of stunningly drawn frames. The tender love story between Jiro and Naoko adds a poignant emotional layer that humanizes the film, while Joe Hisaishi’s score provides a hauntingly beautiful accompaniment. It may not be Miyazaki's best compared to other masterpieces, but it is perhaps his most personal, and it clearly reflects his dedication and passion. See more Read all reviews
