In fact, if we were to be honest, the overall premise itself is deceptive because it is hardly about the mother but largely about her son's middle life crisis realization as to how fleeting life is. The plot is essentially domestic squabbles strung together. And there are a lot of them. This movie tags many subplots that essentially result in nothing and are not that interesting. Indeed, they are all connected to the main theme, but oh so sparsely. What helps the film is great acting by the entire cast and great music, making the overstaying runtime much more charming. See more jordan m 01/20/2022 This certainly wasn't a bad movie, but there's no doubt it was the weakest entry to the Best Foreign Language category at the Oscars for its year. The acting was great and the dialogue was well-written; the jokes were good and some of the scenes were plenty endearing. The issue is that they took a rather mundane and melodramatic premise and didn't really elevate it the way that, say, Amelie did with its love story. They didn't manage to convince me that the parents renewing their vows was important or necessary despite the ample runtime they had for accomplishing that. I would've preferred a more focused story on Rafael's restaurant woes as they were the most interesting part by quite a margin for me. See more 09/10/2018 Deeply moving, heartfelt movie. Hard for me to spot the acting, the characters jumped out off screen, seemed so real to me. I found the entire experience quite endearing, lovely & enchanting. In all he does, but every Argentinian knows that, as he is in all their movies. It's a middle age crisis themed work, surrounded with love and family. Sweet and true. See more 10/25/2017 Son of the Bride is a simple family drama about a man who is struggling to find balance in his life. This is the type of film that could easily fall into the kind of sappy melodrama that you’d typically find on the Lifetime network. However, there was something special about the way that this movie was written. It was more realistic in the presentation and, while there were heartfelt moments, it never fell into emotional manipulation. The cast of the film was brilliant, particularly Ricardo Darin. He is the central character, and his journey is what keeps the audience invested. While he often makes choices that would annoy me in most movies, you can sense his confusion and conflict. I found myself sympathizing with what happened to Darin throughout the film, even when he’s being an idiot. The rest of the cast fit their roles so naturally that it was like watching a real family working through their issues. Son of the Bride ends in a satisfying fashion, but without overdoing it with a cheesy Hollywood ending. This is the second movie from Argentina that I have seen which is as good or better than any American movie in the same genre. I recommend anyone who is a fan of this style of film give Son of the Bride a chance. See more Read all reviews
