Critics Consensus

A messy but affecting college comedy, Roommates swaps big laughs for emotional sincerity, elevated by strong performances even as its uncertain tone keeps it from fully coming together.

The film won’t be remembered as a campus classic, or even in the upper half of college movies, but it’s also not hard to see a world where somebody watches it at exactly the right time in their lives and proceeds to cherish it forever. Go to Full Review

Questioning the moral fortitude of these comedies used to be something only critics did [...] Now 'Roommates' is getting in on the act and I respect the film’s sense of introspection. I just wish it had funnier jokes. Go to Full Review

[While the] framing device is purposefully heighted, Sandler and East are fantastic at bringing a level of emotional realism to Devon and Celeste’s complicated bond, which is two parts Girls, one part Single White Female. Go to Full Review

One of the twists in "Roommates" lies in a side love story that builds from the first episode and steals the show by the last episode. That’s the familial bond between brother and sister. Go to Full Review

Nate A @natealaniz 15h Gotta give it a 3 the movie was interesting but the tension from her room mate came out of nowhere but it was bound to happen and predictable. See more L. F @RT68678650 1d It was ok. An easy, enjoyable watch, but not particularly memorable. It felt like a first draft which needed a few extra layers added for it to really turn in into something clever that you'd revisit. As it stands, it's a little light in content, humour and emotion, meaning it doesn't come close to the iconic status of Clueless or Mean Girls (which are both referenced). A little rushed at times and lacking that extra punch. I also felt it could have benefitted from a stronger, more prominent soundtrack throughout. See more Ravza @rottendoll444 1d Firstly, I must say that it's not even near to be a comedy. Nothing about this movie was funny. I watched it while being in tears and couldn't get it out of my head for days. But despite that, it's such an amazing movie. It really is so realistic and we can clearly see how far a ''hungry'' person for friends can go. I feel like teenagers have lots of things to learn from it. It really shows us that no matter what you sacrifice, a manipulator will do their thing and use you nevertheless. This movie shook me and brought me to the reality. It showed me the consequences of being a people pleaser. So, I definitely recommend it. Especially, if you tend to be a people pleaser. See more Alexandra B @RT93395053 3d This isn’t a comedy, it’s a horror movie See more Khello M @RT14406949 4d it was an okay movie but i expected more from it the story was interesting but it felt predictable in some parts the characters were decent but some choices were frustrating the comedy was hit or miss and it struggled between being funny and serious it wasnt bad but i dont think i would watch it again See more Cory W @RT42944590 Jul 18 Definitely a funny drama See more Read all reviews
