Critics Consensus

Phantom Thread's finely woven narrative is filled out nicely by humor, intoxicating romantic tension, and yet another impressively committed performance from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Anderson has trouble coaxing this struggle to any sort of emotional climax; its fanciful, symbolic ending is the sort critics will praise for its careful ambiguity even as they overlook its narrative desperation. Go to Full Review

Anderson makes movies that may refuse to explain themselves but nevertheless manage to engage the viewer, in part because he tends to cut from confined spaces to open ones as if inviting us to enter them. Go to Full Review

See more jimena 10/27/2024 One of my favorite movies ever See more Vixo S @vixo_six 1d Phantom Thread is not simply a story about toxic love, but a precise psychological study of control, dependence and the need to belong. Paul Thomas Anderson builds tension through silence, gestures, repeated sounds and domestic rituals, making small details feel emotionally charged. The film suggests more than it explains, allowing the relationship between Reynolds and Alma to grow into a quiet battle where affection and power become almost inseparable. Daniel Day Lewis is magnetic, giving Reynolds a controlled and unsettling presence, but Vicky Krieps is just as essential. Her Alma is observant, calm and increasingly difficult to read, turning the relationship into something far more complex than a one sided conflict. Elegant, strange and deeply layered, Phantom Thread is a film that rewards attention and invites revisiting. Its beauty lies not only in what it shows, but in everything it leaves hidden beneath the surface. See more Chris S @Janomi 2d The film is extremely slow in pacing, movement, and speech; it was boring, really. I didn’t enjoy much about this strange, borderline nonsensical film, despite its critical acclaim. The story often felt more interested in mood and atmosphere than in providing a compelling narrative, which made it difficult for me to stay invested. If I’m reaching to find some highlights, I’d say it was PTA’s most minimalist and restrained work, while still featuring psychological conflict between its characters. He provides complexity through Alma and Reynolds’s relationship, and much of the film’s tension comes from their unusual power struggle. Daniel Day-Lewis delivered the believable performance that we’ve grown to expect from him, but his character was one of my least favorites of his career. While I can appreciate the craftsmanship, performances, and attention to detail, the film ultimately left me cold and is among my least favorite Paul Thomas Anderson films. See more Mary B @MURDOC2021 4d A stunning film, amazing cinematography without even having a cinematographer, incredible acting by Day-Lewis and everyone else, A unexpected twist that doesn't ruin the film on a rewatch, one of the most iInteresting couples put to screen, this film is a must see and one of Anderson's best up with There Will Be Blood, The Master, And Punch-Drunk-Love See more Read all reviews
