The pacing moves incredibly slow & lets these mesmerizing shots to soak beyond what feels good. The plot is straightforward with deplorable characters trying to justify their horrible sins. The lighting is a bold mix of colors that build a dreamlike tone. Refn’s directing goes overboard on his signature style but there isn’t enough meaning to back it. See more Blu B 01/17/2025 It's moody, the lighting is good and probably the best thing, and there is a mysteriousness to the whole thing it gives off. Problem for me is that doesn't mean anything when they story is so scattershot, the direction isn't that good, and it's also very boring. The acting, editing, and pacing are terrible here. Almost no dialouge but also almost no emotion either. Forget wooden and stilted. Everyone is basically robots and never act like how a normal person would in any of these situations. Sometimes this is about the relationship with his Mom, the police finding the killers who killed the other dude, and sometimes it meanders so much I don't even know. I swear half the time were not even focused on Gosling and it's these other characters who I don't know much about or don't care about. It gives off a arthouse vibe to it without a well crafted story to keep it grounded or rather a poorly told one I'm not sure. The cinemaotgraphy isn't good despite a memorable setting and the red lighting really beingthe star here. It makes everything sort feel other worldy. But every shot in this is the same. A deep space type of shot that gets so boring after a while. There is hardly any variety in the camerawork. No close ups, hardly any camera movement, zooming, anything like that. It's just so boring eventually once the novelty of the lighting wears off. The violence is over the top and the gore looks amazing like John Wick type stuff but it rings so hollow. It jsut feels like gore for the sake of gore with no meaning. The music is also just boring stuff as well. It's like Thai music for the setting but it just felt so slow and didn't help anything.
