Plus, the movie feels like 3 different movies clumsily rolled into one with each act. Isla Sorna feels less like a failed theme park and more like a wild, uncontrolled ecosystem, giving the sequel a meaner and more dangerous identity than the first film. Jeff Goldblum is still great as Ian Malcolm, bringing sarcasm, intelligence, nervous energy, and moral frustration to the reluctant-lead role. The dinosaur action also delivers some memorable spectacle, especially the T. rex attacks, raptors in the tall grass, stampede, and San Diego chaos. The trailer hanging over the cliff is the movie’s best set piece, tense, physical, and beautifully staged. The problem is that the story is much messier than the original. The rescue mission, corporate hunters, dinosaur capture plan, and city finale do not fit together as cleanly. There is plenty to like, but it lacks the magic and elegance of Jurassic Park.
