Romance is sad as no matter how you slice it, it is two people getting together with little chance of successful relationship. (Example, one routinely criticizes the other for foolish things.) And comedy? Not really funny although a few dumb scenes may make you laugh. Overall, a very shallow film that may pass the time, but when it's done you're left with, "I should have watched something else." Also, throw in the abundant use of the F word, not limited to the funny or action way, which makes it more confusing as a supposed rom-com, even if those words are not hurled at each other. What’s especially delightful is how the cast seems to grow with every frame. Familiar faces keep popping up, each adding texture and energy, giving the film an unexpectedly A-list feel without ever feeling showy. It balances comedy, action, romance, even car culture, so well. It manages to be both heartfelt and irreverent, action-packed and intelligent, romantic and down-to-earth. This has been one of my favorite movies for years; not once did my most recent re-watch make me doubt my love for this film. The only thing I can think of for its subpar reviews is that it's too self-aware of the medium it occupies, Randy's incompetence borders on impossibility, or that it's too 'snarky'/sarcastic, like what a grounded Deadpool-like would be produced. Anyone reading this in the year 2026+, don't mind the negative reviews (especially the one saying it doesn't have enough action. The whole point is that it's not an over-the-top action-fantasy spectacle a la Michael Bay). It's a truly authentic take on an action rom-com based in some possible reality.
