A Dutch film that runs just under an hour proves that folk horror can still surprise when it has something genuine to say. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Not for everyone, especially if you want escapist popcorn horror or are allergic to horror with social commentary. But for viewers who love folk horror that is moody, mythic, feminist, and fierce, this is a Dutch delight worth seeking out. Go to Full Review

Everything from the acting, to the screenplay, to the designs helps to reinforce every other element. ... You can do a lot with a little, if used economically and smartly. Heresy does just that. Go to Full Review

Nic F @munitots 1d A really atmospheric, gorgeously cinematic movie – visually stunning and immediately gave you the sense of the environment, the essence of village life, and people's roles within it, just by showing nice amounts of interaction. I loved the way the perspective of the forest changed as the movie went on (slight spoilers) from menacing and forbidding, to a powerful refuge. Anneke Sluiters conveyed so much with just her subtle postures and expressions, she was amazing. But the plot was not really fleshed out enough, IMHO. I felt like the set up was perfect: there was a fantastic premise and characters you were engaged by and sympathetic to, then it kind of swirled into a beautiful, trippy film clip. I thought there were really interesting options for the paths this film could have taken, and it kind of just hovered a bit. It was only a short movie (1 hour), so I enjoyed it nonetheless, and do recommend it, but I feel like its full potential was slightly wasted. See more Sam P @laniakea May 27 Folk horror done right. No jump scares, no franchise safety net. Just creeping, suffocating dread built with patience and purpose, rooted in the ancient Dutch legend of the Witte Wieven, ghost witches said to haunt the deep woods. Director Didier Konings, a former Hollywood concept artist, learned what the studios do with limitless budgets and came home to show what vision and restraint can achieve without one. The result is atmospheric, bleak, and genuinely unsettling in ways most modern horror has completely forgotten how to be. Hollywood, take note. This is how it's done. See more Jessica H @RT03263521 May 15 Great acting, creative and beautiful cinematography. Limited interaction with the "dark forces lurking in the woods," and lacking storytelling of the folklore. Felt mostly like a dark mystery or drama, plot focused on social stigma and relationship dynamics of a religious fanatic community See more Ew I @EWMOVIE May 13 Beautifully shot and acted. Excellent folk horror. Only an hour long so it flew by. I’d love to see more character development and the storyline could have had something more original in there. There was time for it but maybe no desire from that from filmmaker. But as a short film it’s fantastic. It was realised stunningly well. See more Thomas S. @RT61819216 May 10 Great movie. Suspenseful, creepy, and if you aren’t a man baby then it has great commentary on life as a medieval woman. Great visuals. If you like folk horror give it a watch See more Read all reviews
