When his brother asks him to look after his young son, Clifford (Martin Short), Martin Daniels (Charles Grodin) agrees, taking the boy into his home and introducing him to his future wife, Sarah (Mary Steenburgen). Clifford is fixated on the idea of visiting a famed theme park, and Martin, an engineer who helped build the park, makes plans to take him. But, when Clifford reveals himself to be a first-rate brat, his uncle goes bonkers, and a loony intergenerational standoff ensues.

The kid is obnoxious from start to finish, and the way he fantasizes about his uncle's girlfriend (Mary Steenburgen) is tasteless.

Clifford never quite finds its tone. The course of the plot has an inevitability about it that is about as wearying as it is reassuring... And yet Clifford is intermittently hilarious, mainly thanks to Short's performance.

As an '80s baby, I loved this movie. As an early adult, I bought the DVD because I loved it so much. As a mom, I just showed to my 6, 8 & 10 year olds, and while there were moments of tension, overall, they teally liked it. The plot is sound, the actors are amazing, and I cannot comprehend this Rotten Tomatoes score -- it's obscene. The movie is amazing. Kids today still get it. I'll go as far as to say "Step Brothers" wouldn't happen without this movie.

I loved this movie as a kid, and was curious if it held up now. I haven't laughed this hard in years! This is Martin Short's masterpiece, from the opening scene with the faked heart attack to the faces he makes trying to look like a "real, human boy", it had me in hysterics from start to finish. I can't imagine not loving this film, you'd have to be devoid of all humor and mirth. Grodin is amazing as the uncle and the script moves briskly from gag to gag. One of the best comedies of all time in my opinion.

Brilliant and hilarious. Don't believe the bad reviews! Comedy at its best! Charles Grodin plays the perfect straight man to be victimized by Martin Short's Clifford. A comedy classic!
