Actually, it's somewhat fascinating to compare different camp classics. Let's briefly review four of the best: Valley of the Dolls was a huge box office success following the #1 fictional novel of the prior year. It was allegedly based on real life celebrities, starred competent TV actresses and had a legendary actress in a major supporting role. It's premise, though poorly written, is a serious one. The producers had absolutely no aspirations to make a 'quality' film. The film got lousy reviews yet remains enjoyable due to campy dialogue and over the top acting. Mommie Dearest was a success at the box office and is based, of course, off of the (auto) biography of Christina Crawford and her legendary mother Joan. It starred one of the top actresses of the 70s. The film is fact based and tackled child abuse but in a way similar to Baby Jane rather than in a serious manner. The producers had expected this film to garner critical praise. The film got lousy reviews yet remains enjoyable due to campy dialogue and over the top acting by its star. Showgirls was a huge bomb at the box office and was written for the screen. It starred a motley crew of TV celebrities. The story is trite and certainly not ambitious. The story line is salacious, highly pretentious, and in line with Madonna's overly 'erotic' MO. I don't know what its producers' expectations were. The film got lousy reviews yet remains enjoyable due to campy dialogue and wooden acting by Madonna. I watched Body of Evidence at a studio preview screening. The audience of (other than myself) industry professionals were howling with laughter throughout the movie. If you should watch this, pay attention to the lines of the courtroom judge in the trial scenes. She is a well-respected actress but had ridiculous lines to say. Her scenes are the best. All four movies are fan favorites because of the over the top dialogue and acting. Two of the four were financial bombs. Only one viewed itself as a serious, quality film, and only one comes across as silly and pretentious. Only Body of Evidence was of a sexual nature. Still, while all four have similarities, their story lines and plots are quite unique. One other thing: we laugh WITH Valley of the Dolls and Showgirls, but we laugh AT the other two. Which one is my favorite? I like Showgirls for the fun of it, Valley of the Dolls for its OG nature, Mommie Dearest for the brute force of Faye Dunaway's acting, and Body of Evidence for laughing AT it. I can't help but wonder if wdf having oral with Madonna is what caused his teeth to get so jacked up or if it was wdf's nasty teeth that caused some rare, uncurable ,disfiguring bacterial disease that has caused Madonna's face to look so odd now that she's older. See more Jeff M @jeffmarshallmovieblogger 01/26/2024 I know life is short, but sometimes I purposefully watch bad movies just to see if they are indeed as bad as their reputations would lead one to believe. Often times they aren't all that great but certainly not as bad as expected. And then there are movies like this one, whose 8% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating seems generous. Wowsers, this is one bad movie! And I would nominate it for Worst Movie of All Time Featuring Multiple Oscar Winners/Nominees. The has four of them (Dafoe, Anne Archer, Julianne Moore and Frank Langella), and each gives the worst performance of their careers. And then there's Madonna in her richly deserved Golden Raspberry Award winning performance. I'm actually a fan of some of her music, but something happens when she gets in front of a movie camera. I think it was Patti Lupone who said Madonna as dead behind the eyes when she's onscreen. And it's true. Her line readings here are so flat you'd think her character was reading recipe directions rather than defending herself of murder. It's absolutely laughable. And the whole movie itself is esthetically ugly and appears to be rather cheap. And it's no surprise that this movie came out one year after BASIC INSTINCT, a movie which apparently the filmmakers saw a hundred times. This is a stinker! See more Read all reviews
