Jack M @RT92191701 1d Antz is an alright start for DreamWorks. It is mediocre and forgettable at times, and the film hasn't aged well with the animation too. The characters look kind of ugly and weird as well and I just prefer A Bug's Life better. Nothing else to say about this movie, just a fine start. This film wasn't just an early effort in feature CGI animation; it was a high-stakes cultural gambit, launching the directorial careers of Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath and anchoring its tale of microscopic revolution with a voice cast that could fill a stadium: Woody Allen as the angst-ridden worker ant Z, Sharon Stone as the rebellious Princess Bala, and a truly villainous Gene Hackman as the genocidal General Mandible, flanked by icons like Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Lopez. Antz plunges us into Z’s quest for significance, a tiny revolutionary who stumbles into major political upheaval when he uncovers Mandible's plot to drown the worker class and establish a soldier-only utopia. See more Cenny 4 @KenTan May 17 I enjoyed this movie, following the journey (physical and mental) of ant Z. The character growth was fun to watch, not only about Z but also of the other ants. The characterization was really good in this film, with each character being distinctly them. The love story is a little corny, but fun to watch nevertheless. Emotionally I think the story is also very strong, but slightly lacking. Overall, I enjoyed this show and will watch it again! The animation was also pretty good for 1998 I think. See more Dr. C @drcereal Mar 8 A good analysis on class society that somewhat elopes from its ideological potential at the end, when, although ant militarism is defeated by the heroism of the working ant, the conditions for the working ants are not changed, perpetuating the ants' historical cycle of individualism and alienation. However, the historical context of this film shouldn't be ignored. This film is currently seen by different watchers as apparently "boring," but I would argue that this was because the film happened to be released on roughly the same date as "Disney's" (for material accuracy purposes, monopolies don't "make" original animation films, they commission them) "A Bug's Life." Disney's decision to release that movie on the same date is a move of strategic sabotage to suppress competition in the developing animation industry, forcing Antz, a movie of its own, unique animation style, to be unfairly compared to a film that utilizes differing animation methods, both shown to the same audience.
