Jim G @RT40722865 Mar 30 I got drawn into this movie while randomly surfing the channels one night. Being a history buff, I was struck by the accuracy of events as they unfolded. Compared to John Wayne's big screen epic, this one has more believable characters and is historically based. Battle scenes were especially effective lacking nothing in scale or ferocity. Both sides of the battle are depicted. Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett was a pleasure to watch. Who knew Davy played the fiddle! He also took part in Gen Jackson's massacre of the Creeks in the First Creek Indian War - a fact usually glossed over. Crockett tells the chilling tale. To its credit, the movie doesn't end with the defeat at the Alamo, but rightfully continues to tell the story of Sam Houston's eventual victory over Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, a battle field I have visited. Again, the telling is historically accurate. To summarize, if you want to know what really happened at the Alamo, this is the version to see. See more Jerry E @engelbach Mar 27 Better than I'd been led to believe, but not by much. Its chief failing is the script: far too long and focused on the wrong things. The historical events that led to the Alamo would have been fast-paced and exciting, instead of the silly byplay depicted among a handful of irritable smaller-than-life leaders. Once the movie tries to really get going, it bogs itself down in slow, wordy declarations and interactions that fail to excite interest. The result is that a handful of interesting scenes are submerged and drowned in an overall sense of plodding dullness. By the time it's only halfway over I'm tired of watching it. Davy Crockett playing the fiddle is an annoying late punctuation in a movie that seems desperate to try to save itself. But it simply dies long before the last of the Alamo defenders fall. First Billy Bob Thornton as Davy Crockett, best thing ever and the movie is just good the way they made it was good I watched this in school and I was just admiring the way they did it how Davy Crockett with him using a violin at the middle and the end. And I know I was just talking about Billy Bob but really watch this and don't underestimate or overestimate the movie just go in like its a normal movie and take detail in how they copied how it did in real life. See more Hughe J @Hughe Oct 5 The Alamo was released in theatres in 2004 and stars Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, Jason Patric, Patrick Wilson and others in a historic epic about the famous battle of the Alamo. It's set in 1835 after Texas declared it's independence from Mexico and captured the Alamo and San Antonio. In response Mexico's leader Santa Anna leads the army to retake the fort and crush the rebellion. The movie features legendary real life people like Davy Crockett, James Bowie, and General Sam Houston and some of the battle scenes were quite good. I liked how the film tried to depict the people involved, good and bad, with all of the fears, motivations, and desires being present. The fight for the Alamo itself was really well done, as was the subsequent defeat of Santa Anna near the San Jacinto River days later. Overall I enjoyed the movie and the acting especially Thornton's portrayal of Davy Crockett.
