Brave explorers are headed for the far reaches of the galaxy in the continuation of the story that began with "2001: A Space Odyssey." Hyams directed, produced, scripted, even supervised photography, but his dossier is not that of a masterbuilder. He's a sturdy craftsman who gets all the gears moving in tight rhythm. His film is impressive but not elating.

2010 picks up where 2001: A Space Odyssey left off and tells a much more intricate story of what specifically happened with the Discovery's mission, which led to David Bowman's disappearance and Frank Pool's death (how ever in the books Pool did not die and was found and recovered in 3001- a millennia ahead- read 3001: The Final Odyssey by Sir Arthur C. Clarke for more information). In this movie- we discover what happened to the Discovery after HAL was deactivated and what led to the Discovery's mission turning out the way it did. With memorable appearances by John Lithgow, Bob Balaban, Roy Scheider, and Dame Helen Mirren, the cast and crew made this movie one to remember- especially if you are a sci-fi fan. I highly encourage those who have seen 2001 and 2010 to read the novels by Sir Arthur C. Clarke. You will be in for a fascinating ride. 4.5 out of 5 stars- highly recommend this one for all of you science fiction fans out there.

Nice to see all the actors so young. Enjoyed other Clarke novels but this was disappointing in its "space aliens/God" sowing "life" via huge choloate bars. I wanted it to be better than 2001. It's a tie for last.
